Under the Weather

Things have been a bit different over here at casa de Johnson–Holly is pretty sick so finding time to blog has been fairly challenging.  (But I have found time to take photos…go figure!)

She appears to be heading into recovery now, must have something to do with the American Girl Doll she is clutching. (Side note: the frown is totally real.  She was that under the weather, she wasn’t aware her picture was even being taken.) Her dad went to the Mall of America yesterday and brought her home one, turns out an ambulance ride/ER run the night before can make a dad do just about anything for his little girl.

Guess I really WILL be diving in head first into sewing projects huh?! Before all of this hit, we did get one Simplicity Pattern and some fabric to make a pair of pajamas for her doll. (Her doll, incidentally, will be referred to by her name from this point forward….Rosie.) Rosie/Holly really like polka-dots, so you can be sure there will be a lot of dots in her wardrobe!!  Almost all of the fabric I have so far is dotted:)

I am not sure where Holly came up with that name, but Rosie was the name Holly was going to have for the longest time.  (At one point I think I was even calling my pregnant belly Rosie.) Uncanny yes?

Aunt Shelley - AWW My heart just aches for her. That’s when I just want to cuddle and kiss my little one! There is nothing worse than a very sick young lady! Hope the weekend turns out to be a whole lot better for everyone!

Stephanie - Oh my goodness, an ambulance ride? We do need to catch up. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. Tell Holly that nanny hopes she gets better soon!! Love you guys.

Digital Project Life : Week Nine

It goes without saying that I am still LOVING Project Life.

This week we still had my mom with us, so there is still some “Cake love” shown! We also had a big snowstorm (big for this winter anyway), a first visit to the dentist for Holly, and a lot of photos of EXACTLY who the girls are right now.

Holly is becoming more and more like her mom and dad everyday–her nose is constantly in a laptop! Since we own three computers she has officially declared one of them hers, and is spending a lot of time on Disney Junior’s website playing games.

She still makes plenty of time for imaginary play too. Her current favorite thing to do is play wedding–which I was fortunate enough to get a picture of this week. She loves to dress up in her princess gear and carry around this cheap bouquet of fake flowers I bought at Michaels…seriously how is it that the 99 cent toys/things are the objects kids  play with the most?! (Don’t even get me started on cardboard boxes!)

On page two there is a bit more of Marie–she is growing up so much! I was shocked to find she could hold her head up, and even more shocked at her hand-eye coordination with her new play toy. I made sure to write down the words to the song we sing to her this week as well.  Don’t want to forget her little ditty!

This week I found myself going through my digital scrapbook supplies again and venturing off of the traditional clementine path–it’s been interesting to see what I choose depending on my mood! Can’t wait to see what next week brings:)

deb duty - Your photography and your layouts are beautiful! Love the soft lines. I got my mouse pad on Etsy. There’s a link in my project life post to the shop if you’d like to visit it.

Jules - Oh so dreamy and soft colours and styles! Fabulous photos too. I love everything about this!

Andrea - Beautiful pages. Your pictures really pop. Really like the Mar wk 9 title on the page–cool colors with flowers.

Julie - Absolutely beautiful photos Heather! I love your title card!

Have a great week!

WendyM - Beautiful pages!

Catherine at Design Editor - So fun to see a digital album. Looks awesome!

kristina - LOVE your pages! You do digital beautifully!
Sweet photos, too! ;)

Ann Cobb - Just wondering how you’re doing the March calendar 4×6? Love your layouts!

Heather Johnson - Those calendars are actually stamps/brushes from Splendid Fiins. Click here to get them at Jessica Sprague–I love them!

Scrumptious - Hi Heather, I love your pages! Your color & design sensibilities are impeccable. I’m very new to digital stuff, and I have a question I’m hoping you might be able to help me with. I want to make “cut-out” text, like you have on the purple banner that says “Love this photo,” where the text area shows what’s underneath the banner. I thought this would be easy (and maybe it is) but for the life of me I can’t figure it out in Photoshop! And my searches for tutorials haven’t borne fruit, either; it’s a hard term to search for as there are many different interpretations. Would you be willing to share how you did it? I’m going to feel silly if it’s something really obvious, but at least I’ll know!

The Girl's Room : Project One

I have been in love with these puzzles since the moment I saw them five years ago. I also knew I would never use them as puzzles–they were simply too cute and needed to hang on the wall. I immediately came home that afternoon and hot-glued all of the pieces down so that these could hang in Holly’s nursery.  And they did, for awhile.

Sadly they have been sitting in a closet for the past eight months, ever since we moved to our new house. Sure….I can blame it on being pregnant all summer, and then newborn care after that, but the truth is I was a bit overwhelmed when we moved in, and when I am overwhelmed my creativity gets zapped, and I end up doing a whole lot of nothing.

It appears something in me has snapped finally, and I have spent the last three days rearranging  our entire top floor and thinking up plans for decorating virtually every room in our home. My first big task was moving the girls into the same room on our first floor. (Don’t ask how that’s going yet…that’s a whole other story!) I have taken the second floor, which was previously just Holly’s room, and turned it into a creative wonderland with a sewing and art area for the girls and I, as well as office space for me. The girls also have a cute play area at the top of the stairs. (This is my attempt at making their downstairs, more visible room, not look so tornado-like with its toy explosions.) Oh yeah, and I was even able to carve a “guest room” up there too!

All of this moving around did make me laugh when I sat back and looked at my work.  Time and time again in my life I have rearranged rooms and somehow it always happens that I have just the right amount/shape of furniture in colors and styles that all flow. I have no idea how this happens, so much of it has been bought over time, but it speaks to the fact that if you just buy and collect what you truly love it all works out in the end.

I am starting a list of things I want to accomplish this year at home, and can’t wait to share it all here.  It’s not ready yet, but I did manage to get one thing already crossed off (*almost)–the hanging of the puzzles pictured above.

I say almost because my husband likes to do the hanging at our house, or should I say I like him to do the hanging.  (I am, for better or worse, a bit of a loose cannon when it comes to hanging things.)  I start out all precise–measuring, marking, leveling–but get so impatient by the end of it that I sort of just dive in, pound the nails, and create a few mistakes along the way. I am not proud of this, but it is who I am–and my husband knows it!

So as not to mark up the walls in this house, I took the time yesterday to actually create paper templates of the frames so I could see what arrangement I like best.  Super glad I did this, as the way I was going to hang them isn’t the way I think I want to hang them now. Behold the two options….

Can you guess which way I am going to go? Or better yet, leave me your vote in the comments below.

I hope to be able to show you how it turned out soon, if for no other reason than to not subject the poor baby to any more project-filled Saturday afternoons. She sat in her little pink papasan most of the day watching me jump from room to room, and if her mood yesterday is any indication she has already had enough of this nonsense.

Cake - I like the second one, above the dresser

Heather Johnson - me too!

Sarah Kusa - Dissenter here! :) I like them over the crib, with a little more breathing room between the crib and the dresser. Here’s my rationale: my eye wants to see one big thing grouped with smaller things. For example, a big crib with three little puzzles. Or, one giant picture tying together the crib and the dresser. Feel free to toss this out the window, but that’s what I think. Thanks for asking!

Aunt Shelley - I like over the dresser for practical reasons. It makes it a little less tempting when little Marie starts standing and reaching for things. That’s me, always looking at the “what ifs”!

Revamped Week 8, Page Two and Other Random Thoughts…..

My mom headed back home yesterday after a truly enjoyable visit.  She had such fun with her granddaughters, I know it just breaks her heart to head back home, 1100 miles away.  (Particularly since we don’t know if she will be coming back out here again this year.  Help me convince her to, would you?!)

While she was here I didn’t sit at the computer nearly as much, which explains why I have been so absent from blogging.  (Well that, and reading through Elise Blaha’s blog.  WOW. Creative gal–how is it I had never heard of her until now?!)

Anyhow, reading through her blog and the various creative challenges she presents to herself has really inspired me to start doing the same. I spent the better share of the day yesterday changing around TWO entire floors of my house in order to get ready for it! I am going to be working on it a lot during the weekend, so look for a TON of decorating, cooking, sewing, you name it home project posts next week!

For now though, check out my revamped Week 8, Page 2 page. My mom and I stared and stared at this page, neither one of us loving it, but ready to put it to bed anyway.  At least I like it better than before!

Have a great weekend.  Holly is heading off to The Farm, so it will just be Marie and I here holding down the fort. On Tuesday my Aunt Holly comes, the woman I get all of my creativity from. She will be here a week and I can GUARANTEE you there will be lots and lots of projects going on all week. (And lots and lots of laughs. Her visits are the best!)
