Project Life : Tips on Getting Organized

Having just embarked on my first traditional album, a Project Life Baby Album for Her, I really was at a loss on how to get started. And while I do find the tray the supplies come in cute…it just overwhelmed me more than anything because I couldn’t SEE it all. I knew there were prompt cards in there I would need, and I knew there were certain filler designs I wanted to use more than others…but everytime I turned around I couldn’t find the one I wanted. The frustration finally hit the boiling point earlier this week and I sat down and did what I should have done in the beginning.

I pulled out some Design F protectors and got organized!!!

The first thing I did was clear off a big table (trust me you need a lot of space to do this as there are a lot of cards) and separate the cards into piles. I had a pile for:

  • Journaling cards that had journaling lines only, front was vertical orientation and the back horizontal
  • Cards that had journaling lines on one side, and filler designs on the other–all vertical orientations
  • Cards that had journaling lines on one side, and filler designs on the other–all horizontal orientations
  • Cards that has specific prompts (like Cost of Living in our Country, or first bath), or cards made for journaling that there was only one of (for example there is only one that says “This was amazing”)

I had some 4×6 card stock cards lying around, so they became my title cards for each category. Here is a look at how it turned out. First up, journaling cards only. I am just showing the vertical side, which is what I kept on the “front side,” since I use Design A most often:

Next, cards that had journaling lines on one side, and filler designs on the other–all vertical orientations. I took a photo of the front and then the back and placed them next to each other below. Isn’t it great that, at a glance, you can find the colors and design you need?! I actually ended up with two full Design F protectors of this type, but will only show you one so you get the idea:

I ended up with one “extra” journaling/vertical filler on the back, so I included it in with the journaling/horizontal filler on the back cards and just made little labels so I knew what was what. Note, this page is missing a 4×6 title card so it looks a little strange:

Finally a Design F I filled with prompt and special journaling cards. I ended up with two protectors of this variety as well. If your doing this from the beginning, there may be more, remember I have a chunk of them in use already:

The tray houses all of the cards, as the Design F protector acts only as a guide and unfortunately can’t hold them all. So that I could find everything easily, I put all of the cards in the order they appear on the page protector in the tray. As soon as I find rubberbands I will band it all together, as the baby has already grabbed the box and spilled it all over the floor! I also put a post it note label on top of the card pile that says which category the pile is (i.e. journaling cards H/V only or journaling cards w/ filler-Vertical).

I really wish I stopped a minute to do this before I started.

I say again, I really wish I stopped a minute to do this before I started. It has helped me soooo much, and I know that when you couple this with Becky’s ideas on how to get the baby album set up, you will seriously have a lot of fun putting it all together. Oh…and don’t forget these planning pages. My husband always says that any project is easy if you have the right tools. He is so right!

I have already filled up some additional Design F protectors with my Studio Calico cards (yes you read that right, this digi gal is starting to collect some paper supplies…uh oh) and thankfully I have an extra binder I have now labeled my “supply folder” to house all of this in. I have some ideas on how to get my digi supplies organized–let’s keep our fingers crosssed that I can get a handle on that!

I know I am not the only one that digi scraps and has NO IDEA of exactly how much, and what kits/elements and the like are in her stash? Right? Please tell me I am not the only one…..

Jocelyn Thompson - Oh how I love this information! This is such a great idea. …and if you get a great idea on how to organize digital stash that would be so awesome. I have my digital stash on flash drives, dropbox and on my hard drive. Not very effective – hopefully I can get it together and organize all of my stash soon! Makes for happier scrapbooking moments! Thank you for sharing all your work and your great ideas!

libbywilko - Thanks for the great tips Heather.

J3SS1C4 - This is such an awesome idea! I’ve noticed before how annoying it can be to search through the designs of the cards too… My solution for it was to take one of each journalling card and keep them separate in their own little spot. This is much easier and more fun to look at!

Pink Ronnie - Love your ideas for organising! Will definitely pass this on. :)

Digital Project Life 2013 : Week Nine

You didn’t think I would create a “Mary and Laura” dress for Holly last week and then not use the Walnut Grove Digital Collection at AC Digitals did you? Of course I did…and I LOVED the papers in this kit! (As usual, though, I never quite know what to do with elements.)

Whole Spread:

Left Side:

Right Side:

6×12 insert for the week, front and back shown together–but will be two 6×12 pieces:

What we were up to this week: The photos probably say it all! It seems like ages ago now, but for three solid days I was cutting, pinning, measuring, and sewing that dress with my Aunt Holly by my side. By far the most ambitious project I have ever done on the sewing machine, and also the best. I LOVE how it turned out, as does Holly. After all of that was done, and my Aunt Holly went home, we were back to our normal routine of school, naps, playdates, chasing kids, and hanging out in the neighborhood. It was a really fun week. (Minus the day I collapsed with exhaustion of course. Sewing will do that to me.)

Techniques used this week: I am not sure if it’s a true technique (I am unaware of the official name unless you go with what Tara Whitney calls it), but I intentionally took the bonfire photo out of focus. I love the feeling I get when I look at it…it actually looks like a memory doesn’t it?

Other thoughts:  I am completely addicted to 6×12 inserts. I think this is already my fifth one of the year. I will be showing my physical album, with all of the inserts, the first week of April. I have shown a few here, but not all, because they tend to take me a lot longer to get around. I decided that showing them all quarterly would be an easier deadline for me to stick to.

Supplies used this week: Most of the items are listed in the icons below. The Week Nine circle came from September Blue’s blog and was, at the time, a free download. It’s $2.99 now, but I still think that’s a great deal for 52 elements. I absolutely love those elements! My favorite new find of the week was Nettio Design’s cards–they are going to be so awesome for my instagrams!!!

Jessica Anderson - Love this layout! Can you tell me the font on the 6×12? Thanks!

admin - Genial Medium Regular. I think I had to buy it instead of it being a free download…years ago now (it is part of my logo design) so I don’t actually remember where.

libbywilko - Love everything, the photos(especially Marie walking along the snow edged footpath), the stories, the way you designed it and I Adore the insert ! You two did an Awesome job on Holly’s beautiful outfit. <3 I think I will have to get my hands on the books as I think my boys would like them too.

Amy - Your pages are always so great! I love your spread this week. Your pictures are so good as well! Great job!

April Cortinas - Love your layouts. They are awesome. I had a question for you I see you use the bh templates for project life and that you use two different types of papers. So how do you downsize each picture box to be the same size. I tried it last night but couldn’t figure out how to change each layer of the picture boxes?

Donna G. - Love your pages, as always, Heather! You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a digital scrapper use inserts. How does this work?? Are you printing your own pages?

admin - Hi April! I actually directed everyone to a Jessica Sprague video (where I learned how to do it) in my post a few weeks ago that included a double mat layout if you like that look. Here is a link to that post: http://hgjphotography.com/digital-project-life-double-mat-background-free-download/

Sandy - Love the blurry memory pic, great idea! LOVE the Mary and Laura dress! Too sweet! Inspirational pages…Always !!

J3SS1C4 - That dress you made for Holly is the cutest! She’s so adorable in the hat, too! I agree about the bonfire pic looking like a memory. I love you layout!

Julie - Hi Heather,

Your pages are so colorful and capture life’s details so beautifully! I have daughters too (5, 4 & 3mo) and would love to learn how to sew and make dresses like this. Still need to learn how to use the machine I got for Christmas. Adorable how your daughter calls her afghan a “napkin”- my daughters do this too and I can’t correct them either. Currently they call teeth “teek” and our apartment our “department” :-)

Great job on Project Life this year! Thanks for sharing :-)

Project Life : Baby Edition for Her : The First Eleven Pages

Finally.

I am so excited to finally be showing you all some progress on my baby album for Holly. (I am not all that excited for you to see how terrible I am at photographing paper layouts–good golly I don’t know how you paper gals do it!) As most of you who read this blog know, I am a digital gal when it comes to scrapbooking. Up until the Baby Edition arrived at my doorstep in January I had never even seen a real-life Project Life kit. To say I was excited to get started was an understatement, but boy oh boy was I unprepared for the length of time it would take me to get a system down!

The day I received the kit happened to be the same day I had my once a month scrapbooking date night with a friend, oh how I wished Becky’s post on setting it all up had existed then! I managed to do a bit of what she suggested on my own that night, and even reported in a few days later on how I had figured out a system, but let’s just say it didn’t always go according to plan. I learned very, very fast that planning pages were imperative for me–I don’t know if it’s because I am used to being on the computer or what–but I cannot for the life of me figure out how you can do this without a lot of pre-thinking. I was constantly printing pictures in the wrong orientation as well as not enough in number for this, that, or the other thing….and ick. It was just a mess!

I am happy to say that I now use planning pages faithfully, and it’s made a huge difference in the time. So without further ado–I present the first eleven pages of Holly’s babybook:

Title Page:

Page One, Left Side. I chose to start out with The Story of Us. I am not sure why, it just seemed to make the most sense to me. (She wouldn’t actually be here without us, right?!) I would have loved more than anything to make this part of the book a two-page layout…but I couldn’t. There are NO photos of us at all–save a wedding photo, and engagement photo, and a picture we took of ourselves on our last trip prior to baby in 2007. I am always worried about how I look, and am I too fat…and blah, blah, blah so I never let anyone take my picture. Big time regret here. And a reminder that I need to keep getting in front of the camera now.

Page One, Right Side. Next up was the heritage page. I had originally planned to do a grid of the great grandparents in the bottom right pocket, but while I was digging through my printed photo drawer I found a gem. A photo of my mom pregnant with me! I have no idea how I have this photo, but in it went! I think it’s awesome!

Page Two, Left Side.

Page Two, Right Side.

My expecting you section is incredibly light–putting this page together was a real eye opener for me. I have always considered myself a person that takes a lot of photos, so I was incredibly shocked to find less than 5 (save the day of my baby showers) photos of me from the time I was pregnant. No pictures of me holding a cute “month __” sign, no photos of shopping for her, no everyday photos of any kind. I now know more than ever that those are the photos that mean the most to me. Sure it’s nice to see the photos of me with family and friends the day of a celebration, but really? I want to know what it was like to be pregnant for the first time. The feelings, my thoughts…all sadly gone now in the empty alleys of my memory.

I did come across a few treasures though. As I was rummaging through my photo drawer I found two 8×8 scrapbook pages of Holly’s ultrasound photos. Told you I used to paper scrap!!! Honest to goodness I am 99.9% sure these are the last paper layouts I made. I am so glad I kept them (I actually remember once thinking of tearing them apart and tossing them) because they made quite a cute insert. I bought 8×8 page protectors at Joann’s and put a hole in the right place with my crop-a-dile. It’s one of the very few paper tools I have left–glad I kept that too! Here is a look at the two pages with the inserts on each side:

Incidentally if anyone knows where I can find more little tab things like you see on the side of this 8×8 insert (it’s red and says love)–please let me know. I found it on a page of embellishments from Creative Imaginations I had kept that was probably bought in 2006. It’s a sticker in the shape of a tab that folds onto itself that is a nice heavy weight–I think those things are perfect for inserts and I only have about six left!

Page Three, Left Side. I had to combine a lot of things because, again, it would appear at this point in my life I was more of an “event” picture-taker than an everyday one. I just didn’t have very many photos to choose from, so I combined information about setting up the nursery, other names we considered for her, and why we chose the name we did. Fishing in my old photo drawer scored me two photos I am glad are preserved now–a photo of me and my grandmother in Italy together and a photo of my Grandma and Aunt Holly. They were both the inspiration for Holly’s name (her middle name is Elizabeth after my grandmother) so I really love having this photo of the two of them together…even if it is from the 90s! Oh and the foot–yup, it was that bad. Can you believe how swollen I get?!?! Same thing happened with Marie. Hurts just looking at it:)

Page Three, Right Side.

I chose to put all of the shower photos together. (I had a friends shower here in St Paul and a family shower back in New York.) Again–I wasn’t very creative back then so I didn’t have any decor photos, or photos taken from unique angles…it just amazes me how much I have grown as a storyteller. It gets me excited too–so glad I am like that now, as I document the lives of my girls!!

Page Four, Left Side and Right Side. These are the time capsule pages, I loved the concept so much it became a two page spread! I didn’t have a layout dedicated to our house because we no longer live there so info on that went into this layout as did local news, national news, where we traveled that year, pictures of our boys (dogs), and a bit about Saint Paul and why we love it so much.

Page Five, Left Side.

Now we are getting to the good stuff–The Birth Day!! I am so glad I have as many photos as I do this day–I remember so much about it…including the washcloths on my head. That tub was HOT, and anyone that personally knows me knows I do NOT like the heat–so I had to counter balance that heat with something and that something was an ice cold washcloth!! I still laugh about it to this day. For about twenty hours of my labor I was without drugs, laboring in water is just that amazing!! But they made me get out of the tub, which caused me to undilate if you can believe that…and in the end I had to get a c-section. Our doula was still able to come in with us, where she sort of took on the role of photographer–which was awesome. I wouldn’t have these photos otherwise!

Page Five, Right Side.

Our doula also took notes all day and all night (with “time stamps”) that she emailed to me right after the birth. I kept that document in a file labeled “Baby” for years now and yesterday turned it into an insert. I just added a text box on top of a digital paper from the kit and sized it all to 8 1/2 x 11 so I could print it with a photo sheet on my home printer. Not really all that creative, but I think Holly will find it all pretty fascinating someday when she reads it. Here is one side of it, the other side looks exactly the same except where I added an additional title text box that says “Labor Notes recorded by Mom” that details out what I remember during that time period.

Page Six, Left Side. Still telling the story of The Birth Day, I have to add in the scan of her footprint once I hook up the flatbed scanner. It was a looooonnnnngggg day, but I was not idle. No sir. I was a real estate agent at the time and believe it or not I sold a house that afternoon after I received my epidural. I told that story at every listing appointment after that–sure was a great answer to the question, “How hard are you going to work for us?”

Page Six, Right Side. I chose to do the Your Arrival section next. Honestly I wasn’t sure what that section was meant to entail, I defined it as our time in the hospital. There is an insert I want to add in here, but it requires husband participation, so it’s not done yet. He has the funniest story about carrying Holly down the hallway without her cart (a security no-no at our hospital) that I definitely want recorded.

Page Seven, Left Side. More fun in the hospital.

Page Seven, Right Side. This is where I recorded a little bit about the first visitors. Multi-photo 4×6 templates come in really handy on these types of pages!!

Page Eight, Left Side. Bringing her home:)

Page Eight, Right Side. I chose the Your Very First Days of Life title card here, just so I could detail out those first few days in their own special section.

Page Nine, Left Side. We finally made it to Month One! As you can see, I keep it very simple–slip in photos and journal on the cards.

Page Nine, Right Side. I used the Our Family title card here to record about the day we had all of the visitors come to the house. I am nowhere to be seen this day, if I remember right I had slept an hour the night before and was exhausted!

Page Ten, Left Side. I have a bit of journaling to add in here, oh how I wish I would have saved a birth announcement. I really should contact family members and see if anyone saved one.

Page Ten, Right Side–with insert showing, and then without.

The insert is a 5×7 enlargement of my mom rocking Holly. She stayed with us for two weeks after her birth to help me out as I was on bed rest after my c-section, and I knew I wanted to do something special to tell that story. As I was putting the album together last week I emailed my mom and asked her to write a letter to Holly about what it was like to be with her those first few days of her life, and what it meant to her to be there. I told her not to worry about being eloquent and to write from the heart. When I got the email I cried. I am going to type it up and put it on the back of this photo. Can you imagine Holly reading that someday?! Makes me tear up even now. I would give anything to have a letter from one of my grandmothers about what it was like to be with me when I was born. This is a great example of thinking about creative things to do after the fact. Don’t let the fact that your baby isn’t a baby anymore stop you from doing a baby album. It doesn’t matter if it was 5, 15, or even 20 years ago….when you start looking at all of those photos you would be amazed at what you remember and what you would like to add. Never thought of having her write a letter then, but now that I am wanting to record Holly’s story…makes perfect sense! My mom might not have remember every little thing that happened those two weeks, but she remembered enough to write a beautiful heart-felt story.

Page Eleven, Left Side. The beginnings of Month Two. This was the day I played around with posing the poor girl and actually turned my flash off to use some natural light. These are some of my favorite baby pictures. I still have a little bit of journaling to do.

Page Eleven, Right Side, with insert and then without.

The other side of the insert can be seen here:

And that’s where I am right now. It will probably be April before I get another update together, unfortunately these photos were never edited so I not only have to choose which ones I am printing I have to edit them too. (I wish I could say to heck with that part, but the color is so bad and the photos so dark 90% of the time in these old photos that I have to.)

I hope you enjoyed this peek, and I hope it gave you some ideas about what to include if you are thinking of starting a baby album or are working on one.

I can’t say it enough–I am so incredibly happy that I have found a system in Project Life that works for me to record the stories, the quotes, the photos, the craft projects, the life I want to remember.

It’s one of my favorite things in the whole world:)

Michelle Mac - What an absolutely stunning album – Holly will love looking through this with you over and over again!

MaryRuth - Love love love love your album!!!!!! And my baby was born exactly a year after your little girl! Gorgeous album!!

Can I ask how you chose to tradition vs. digital for this album? I’m a digital girl… but after seeing your album might want to go traditional? I’m so confused as which way to go!

Love it… thanks so much for sharing!!

Donna G. - Too funny! Heather, I spent quite a while tonight texting and emailing with one of my daughters-in-law. She’s the mother of my grandson who’s 17 months old, and today she decided to make a baby album for him using a physical PL Baby kit. (This is her first PL project.) If a picture is worth a thousand words, this post is worth several million words. =) There’s nothing like *seeing* the step-by-step process. THANK YOU for taking time to write this long, extremely helpful post. Your pages are fabulous, and your sharing is greatly appreciated.

libbywilko - It looks AMAZING Heather! What a wonderful thing to have for Holly ! Such an inspiration. I bought the digi files and this is on my to do list for the boys books.

A. Shelley - Thought you would like to know that the pic of your Mom’s shower came from me. I gave you a bunch of photos way back when and that was one of them. Glad you enjoy it. Love the album!

admin - Hi MaryRuth–When I sat down to begin doing Holly’s book I started doing it digital…but then I began to feel strongly that it was something that needed to be handwritten so I decided to do it the traditional way. Like having a baby, I was completely unprepared with just how much work that meant!!! If I had to do it over again I would probably do it digitally, all of the printing and running to Walgreens and figuring out what goes where just takes me too long. (I think this has more to do with being new at the “paper way”–I had NO systems down going into it, and that completely effected the speed at which I could get it done. I am so used to digital!! However, I do love the insert capability–you just can’t get that affect when you do it digitally. So I guess I don’t know which I would recommend….they both have pros and cons!!! :)

admin - So glad to have good timing! Have her check out this gal’s too: http://www.thearenaupdate.com/2013/03/project-life-tuesday-thomas-baby-book.html

Sarah’s book is downright amazing–I WISH my book looked that good:)

Heather - Absolutely beautiful! I love the mix of B&W and color photos. And you were able to include such fantastic information that I know you will treasure – love that you have your doula’s notes! Your daughter is so going to treasure this some day.

Kelsey McEvoy - This is the second baby PL post this week (that I’ve seen…so far) and it is so amazing, too! I didn’t make a baby book for any of my 3 kids but this post (and the other baby one from today) has totally inspired me to dig out all the old photos and ephemera and start making a PL baby book for each of my kiddos. THIS LOOKS GREAT!

rachel - this is lovely! definitely gives me some ideas for how to scrapbook once my baby boy gets here!

Margie S (Nihao, Cupcake!) - WHat a beautiful baby book! The work you have put in is obvious. All of those pictures of parents, and grandparents, the stories told, the memorabilia. Amazing keepsake. And it is beautiful – but I already said that. Thanks for sharing.

Teresa - Hip-Hip-Hooray!! WOW! I was so excited to see you’re doing Holly’s album in paper. :) I totally understand your digi-to-paper woes. It took a lot of pre-planning (both in thought and on planning pages) to do my wedding album last month (first paper attempt) and I have to say…I had a really hard time getting back into the digital layouts after that! I really love the handwritten cards for something as sentimental as a baby album. You’ve done an outstanding job on this. She is going to treasure it for always.

Kim Howard - Love your book, it looks like it came together so well. I especially love the part about loving doulas-as a former doula (before I started having too many kids to be on call) I love seeing this!

Jenny B. - This is wonderful!! Every time I see someone use the different sized inserts, it makes me want to switch from all-digital to the pocket pages. I know digital is the right choice for me, but I do love to see all the different pages — and all the handwriting! Love it! :)

Holly - Love everything.

Leslie S. - I really enjoyed looking at your album. You did an amazing job. Your daughter will be so happy to have this album one day. Thanks for sharing.

Alanna N - Hi there! I found you thanks to Becky’s FB page. So glad I stopped by! I am currently working on my OWN baby/childhood album (I’m 24) and am going to sit down with my Mum in the holidays and get her to write little stories and things like that. Then, I plan on doing my partner’s as well (with his mum’s help). I love the idea of our children having something to look back on. I always wished there were more photos of my Mum when she was growing up. Then of course, when we have kids, I’ll be doing it all over again!!

This is my first PL project and I am loving it so far. I purchased the digi kits so I can keep them for the years to come and use things for both mine and my partner’s albums. I also will probably need a lot more “filler” cards as our parents mightn’t be able to remember enough to do a lot of journalling.

Thanks for the inspiration and I will be sticking around to see more in the future! Good luck with it! :)

Sara - I loved your album! I’m currently going back to do my daughter a album and you gave me so much inspiration! Thank you!

Sarah K - See Heather! These are beautiful. And clearly Becky is pretty floored by them too because she certainly sang your praises on FB! I just love those black and white shots you took in the 2nd month section. Precious beyond words!

Shelbie - Thanks for sharing your beautiful album! My guy was born this same year and while I have my photos and journaling organized I’ve just not been motivated to try and put an actual book together. I think I may have the perfect solution for getting books for both of my boys done now! :) Thanks again for sharing. I can’t wait to see more of what you are working on.

Sue - I saw this earlier today when Becky posted it but wanted to come here and comment. I absolutely LOVE that you are paper scrapping even though you are a digi gal :) I really want to put my childhood photos into an album but seriously have no idea how to even start as I have not paper scrapped in years! You have totally inspired me – thank you :)

Debbie - Wow Heather! Just found your blog via Becky Higgins and this is such an inspiring album! I am also a digi scrapper but for the last couple of years I’ve done the paper version of Project Life and have just started my daughters baby album with the PL Baby kit. I completely agree with you about the planning! I’m amazed how some people just manage to throw it all together and it looks great?! I absolutely have to plan out pretty much every page and then order my prints online; it is really time consuming but I’m now starting to embrace the process, enjoy it, and accept that it’s worth investing that time in our family’s memories :-) I can’t wait to see your next post on this album and have added you to my RSS feed :-)

Sarah - Beautiful album! I really like that you hand journaled everything!

admin - Thank you! I seriously don’t know how someone would do it without planning. While I did enjoy it, I found the paper way…for me…was 10x harder. How people keep up with the printing I will never know!!!

admin - Thanks Sue:) I know what you mean….like I said in the post those ultrasound photos were the last paper scrapping pages I did…so it’s been at least six years. The pocket system makes it much, much easier though. It’s the printing and the editing of the photos that have made the project so time consuming. The actually creation of the page takes less than five minutes!!

Mary D. - I found your blog via Becky Higgins. Love the pages you’ve done so far–I am gearing up to do the the baby books for my two boys (6 and 4), so I found these pages quite inspirational. Good luck with the rest of the album!

Holly C - Fabulous baby pages. I’m working on mine at the moment too :)

Fiona - Heather, this baby album is so beautiful! I will also face the challenge of going back several years and trying to remember details when I finally get around to doing my kids’ baby albums (they are nearly 6, 3.5 and almost 2). Even though there may be some photos “missing”, the fact is that now your daughter has something to sit down and look through, and that’s priceless. Thanks for sharing. The pages are beautiful! Fiona :)

J3SS1C4 - Your album is looking amazing so far! I bet your daughter is super excited to look through it, even only part way done! I can’t wait to see your next post when you have more done :-)

Heather (@hbuchwitz) - Thank you thank you thank you! I have a 2008 boy & one on the way – figured I better get the 1st one’s book done! I got 2 kits & filled in some cards for the big boy…. and have stared at it…. I get project life, I DO project life…. but how to put this thing together – I was baffled and convinced I was going to get 1/3 way in and not like what I did. :) I knew Becky had a post but couldn’t find it (thank you for the link!). Also – I am struggling with a total lack of pre-baby pictures…. I am trying to get more this time, but still not taking the “5 months” etc…. I should maybe do that – I am only 5.5 mos & just finally showing somewhat….. so at least 6, 7, 8, 9 right?

Again – thanks!

Heather (@hbuchwitz) - Ohhhh yeah- where did you get your stats for stuff that happened in 2007? Movies, books etc. I need 2008.

admin - Hi Heather–I just googled things like “top movies of 2007″ and things like that. I also struggled with lack of photos–I was a completely different memory keeper then. I think I wrote about it…but in case I didn’t–I not only didn’t have the monthly photos, I didn’t have any photos of me at all. (Except at the showers.) Could not believe it!! It will come together, just dive in and start printing. I am so excited to be almost done!!! I found that although I am not completely in love with what I have done–I am glad that the photos are off of the computer and at least into something we can all look at. It makes my daughter so excited to look at it–THAT’s what I have to remember. (Sometimes I let myself get too hung up on the cuteness!)

Digital Project Life 2013: Black and White Week–Are you ready??

I mentioned a few weeks back that I was going to do one of my black and white weeks beginning on March 4th. I had hoped to put together my own black and white digi-kit for us all to use but…unfortunately….it looks like I might be out of time to pull it together. So I started looking around the internet, and here is what I found:

Some simple gray and white patterns on Etsy–this could be quite pretty…..

Really cool Black and White Papers on Etsy for $1.50–this might be what I use…..

Karen Lewis’ Snapshot Kit–what I used last year…..

Studio Basic Designs’ i’ll go back to black and white kit –this looks TEMPTING…

Really this is all I could find. DEFINITELY need to make some time to create a black and white kit or two as there really does seem to be a shortage out there!

Bear in mind that the kit itself doesn’t have to be black and white at all, that just happens to be how I created my black and white weeks for my 2012 Project Life album. I hope that some people join me next week, my week starts on Monday. Created colorless images of your photos really does give them a totally different feel, I just love stripping all of the distraction away so that the emotion of the photo can come through.

If you plan on playing along leave a comment in this post, and make sure leave me a link to your blog. I can’t wait to check out your layouts!

Kim Howard - I love this idea and I think I originally was going to join in, but we are headed to Disney and not sure if I can go all black and white for a week ;-) I hope that you will do this again though and I can’t wait to see how it all works for others. Like I said-I love the idea!!!

Michelle Mac - Have you seen the new Pebbles collection at AC Digitals? Would love to try this out, but I really don’t like the way my photos look when I convert them to B&W in Photoshop!

admin - Oh I wouldn’t be able to do Disney black and white either. Have fun!!!!!

Melissa Green - This sounds like an awesome challenge! Count me in! I don’t have a blog (actually, I do. But I can’t figure out anything past adding my own background, so I become frustrated and give up), so I have been adding all my layouts to this flickr set:

And thanks for giving me a wonderful excu…. erm, reason to go kit shopping! :)

admin - Awesome! I will definitely be checking it out!

admin - Thanks for the head up, I will go check it out now! Oh…and I got your message about the star–it’s in my brushes, but I have NO IDEA where it came from or what set it even belongs to. I really need to figure out a way to get my digital files organized. I am forever forgetting what I own!!

Digital Project Life : Week Eight

I am here, I am here! WOW. Did not mean to take that much of a hiatus…but my life has been VERY busy this past week. We had a houseguest, I tackled my first piece of complicated clothing on the sewing machine (can’t wait for you to see it!), and chased kids around and around and around and around. Consequently this week’s layout is pretty simple. And definitely odd colors for me–since when do I like orange, brown, blue, and green?!

What we were up to this week: As the Week in Review card sums up, not too much before my Aunt Holly arrived on Thursday the 19th. (And yes, if your wondering, that is where we got the name for our Holly.) While she was here we did a lot of fabric store shopping and then prairie dress preparation. That’s right–I dove right in and made Holly a “Laura and Mary” dress, pinafore, and bonnet to compliment her recent Little House obsession. For the record I FULLY support this obsession, I would MUCH rather her pick up morality and lessons from that show than the pre-teen stuff I see on the Disney channel. Whoops. Sorry for the soapbox!

Techniques used this week: Once again it was brushes and text on photos all day long. And recoloring digital elements in Photoshop. Boy am I obsessed with that!

Other thoughts: I am too tired for other thoughts this week. HA!

Supplies used this week: Most of the items are listed in the icons below. The Week Eight circle came from September Blue’s blog and was, at the time, a free download. It’s $2.99 now, but I still think that’s a great deal for 52 elements. I absolutely love those elements! The I {heart} this photo is an Ali Edward’s brush available at designerdigitals.com.

Cara Miller - Heather, I love the colors and papers that you are choosing for these layouts. Thanks for sharing. hugs, cara

Amy - As usual, great job on your scrapbook page spread for this week! Love it.

Lisa J. - What a fun week!
The browns and yellow of your spread tie in perfectly w/ a Little House on the Prairie dress making.
Your Aunt Holly sounds like she’s such a “kindred spirit.”

Donna G. - BEAUTIFUL pages, Heather! Marie really is a cutie!! And Holly is very pretty!

libbywilko - Love the photographs(as usual) this week and I so agree with what you said about supporting the LH obsession, can’t wait to see the finished dress.

Tina C. - Cool layouts! I think this is the first time I seen it layed out on 12 X 12 sheets of paper vs seeing it in the pockets look all the others I’ve seen this is so refreshing and appealing to a scrapper. Well you inspired me, after I use up all the pages I already bought I can’t wait to use this style, TFS and thanks for the inspiration

Sue - Love your pages so much – again!! Can’t wait to see the dress – what a super, awesome mom you are for encouraging your daughter in what she likes :) I love the September Blue weeks too and used one this week as well (recoloured of course – lol).

J3SS1C4 - I love how vivid this page is! The snow pics are super cute, as is the photo of your daughter buying her craft project!
