Digital Project Life : A Seafoam Palette for Recoloring Digital Elements

If you have been reading along for awhile here, you know that this year I have been positively obsessed with recoloring elements and text when it comes to making my weekly Project Life pages. When I created a tutorial for how to recolor elements a few months ago, one of my suggestions in the video was to open up a number of journaling cards to find colors to sample off of. It occurred to me tonight as I was working on next week’s layouts that this was a cumbersome way to do things….so I created a palette file. Now I will only need to have this open as I recolor instead of numerous journaling card files. Love it!

I thought you all would find it helpful, so feel free to grab the image off of the blog. (It’s a low-res version jpg so I am hoping it will download quickly and easily if you right-click on the image.) If that doesn’t work, just shoot me an email and I am happy to email you the file. I created this by sampling the papers within the digital kit….so I am pretty sure they are accurate. (The dark gray really tripped me up, I would have sworn the text papers were in black…but I enlarged it to 300% and it didn’t sample black…so I am guessing it just looks black but isn’t.)

If I have time this weekend I will create one of these for the Olive Edition as well. If there is another edition out there that you would like one for just leave me a comment.

Have a great weekend!

Alanna N - You’re a genius! I’ve been just opening up other cards to sample what I want. Sometimes the simplest things make us happy. Thanks so much for this! No idea how you did it but now I want one for all of my kits. Which is pretty much all of them…

krista - yay! i did the same thing a while back!! SO much easier to have all the colors together!

Alanna N - How do I get it off your blog though? :/

Julia - Thats awesome!! Would simplify a lot! How did you do it?
thanks a lot! and also thanks a lot for sharing your LOs – it really inspires me!
I would do it for midnight and clementine, if I could ;)

Mendi M - Love this! Thanks for sharing. I can’t seem to right click on it to save, though. Can you maybe look into it? I would love to have it!

lisa - I absolutely love your pages! I love the idea of one pallette with all the colors! Would definately save time! I would love to see it in the turquoise edition!

Rhadonda - Well how cool is that?!! Great job. I don’t have the Seafoam edition but if i ever have the money to buy it i will use your nifty recoloring swatch!

Amber - Genius! Why did I never think of that as I open and close mulitple files to sample colors. Would love Clementine.

admin - I just used the turquoise edition for the first time this week, I will try and whip one up soon!!!

Sindee - I would love to see the Midnight and Cinnamon Editions as well! Thanks much!

Digital Project Life 2013 : Week Thirteen

Sorry I have been neglecting the old blog as of late. First my mom came to town on the 19th for a twelve night stay, then Justin and I skipped town for a three day getaway, and lastly….I finally joined the gym. I spend 90-120 minutes there a day so time for anything else has sort of gone out the window. However, I am feeling mentally and physically soooo much better that it’s worth it. (And I don’t think it will be long before I am able to have more energy to stay up at night and work on projects and designing products. I seriously can’t wait for that.)

Without further ado…here is Week Thirteen featuring the Midnight Edition.

Whole Spread:

Left Side:

Right Side:

I really wish this kit had been released the week I did my black and white pictures, it truly would have been perfect. That being said, I really love this kit with color photos too….I am actually quite surprised how much I love it considering how bright I like my colors. I think I love it so much because of all of the black–anyone else noticed how obsessed I am with black this year?!

What we were up to this week: House guests, first haircuts, seeing ourselves on TV, time together….it really was a good week!

Techniques used this week: Nothing I haven’t done before. I added a ghosted journaling block to my popcorn photo, but kept anything “fancy” to a minimum. Not even many brushes this week. This kit really screams simple to me.

Other thoughts:  I love this kit. All of the new kits actually. It’s so wonderful to have so much variety with Project Life products. Don’t you all agree?! I bought both a Jade and a Blush kit when they were on HSN–can’t wait to show you all what I will be doing with those. If only someone could add, oh let’s say, 4-6 extra hours to my day!!

Supplies used this week: Most of the items are listed in the icons below.

Lisa Johnson - I ♥ the picture of the popcorn w/ the movies you were watching.
It has a lot of visual impact! :)

I can’t wait to see what you’re doing w/ the Blush & Jade editions.
I was up WAY TOO LATE the past 2 nights laying out all the cards and putting them into my plastics. I’m all set for 2014 & 2015! :)

Nicole Mann - Wow, I LOVE what you did with the Midnight edition this week! I agree that all of the new kits this year are AMAZING! I also really love what you did with the popcorn picture… I’ll have to remember that technique! Looks great as always :)

Jennifer - Hi Heather – I’m just getting started with Project Life and have a couple of questions because I love your layouts. I noticed you’re using the Becky Higgins templates, which I also have, but you are doing a double layer of background paper. Are you sizing down he template to be able to do this? Also, the link to the calendar brush isn’t working and I’m not finding it on Jessica Sprague – do you know where I can find this now?

Marcie Wyatt - Thanks for showing off the Midnight edition this week. After seeing your layouts I can’t wait to use it!

Sue - Your week looks amazing – I love the Midnight Edition. I just may have to break down and buy it :) I totally hear you about adding 4-6 hours to the day (that would be awesome!!).

libbywilko - Wow… And we’ll done for being so dedicated to going to the gym. I so need to be do that amount of exercise.

Digital Project Life 2013 : Week Twelve

Loved getting a chance to create pages with a brand new core kit–The Kraft edition! I simply love this kit, the colors are great for the everyday, boy or girl, so versatile and fun. Lots of geometric shapes in the papers….I already can’t wait to use it again!

Right Side:

What we were up to this week: With a visitor in town (my mom) there was a whole lot more going on this week. We went to The Mall of America to The American Girl Doll Store and had lunch, just one of the many traditions we do when “Cake”  is in town.

Techniques used this week: Nothing new this week. Still used brushes A LOT, still recoloring EVERYTHING. I did resize 12×12 templates I collected around the web to 6×6–love how digital supplies give you so many options.

Other thoughts:  I liked shaking it up a bit by using a different template–design E. I had so many photos, and didn’t want to have a zillion inserts, so it seemed like the best way to record a lot.

Supplies used this week: Most of the items are listed in icons below. The “Favorite Time of Day” stamp is part of Ali’s Everyday Journaling Prompts set. The birthday stamp is from Paislee Press’ Birthday Presslines.

libbywilko - What lovely photos of your Mum with the girls, the make up session looks so cute.

Amy - I love this spread… everything about it is great! Great photos and great colors.

Michelle Macpherson - love, love, love the Design E look. Especially like the 12 x 12 templates – are the PL templates? My daughter’s birthday is coming up and this is a perfect way to capture lots of photos of one event.

Sue - As if I could not love your style any more…..this is amazing!! Love how you did the 6×6 photo collages by resizing your templates. You are a genius!!! I am totally going to try that. It is like mini scrapbook pages within your main page – awesome.

Kelli W - I am very much a paper and physical product kind of scrapper, but when I see your layouts, I wish I could do digital that looked as amazing as yours. Your layouts are always awesome!

Cerise - The more I see this kit in use, the more I love it. Your pages look so fantastic. Love the pucker face, it’s so great that you managed to get a shot of it.

Scrumptious - The Kraft kit looks great here! I really like how you made this week’s B&Ws have a brown tone to go with the tones of the kit. I love the idea of making a collage of square pics to go in the 4 pocket design E page – I have never once used one. (I’m always needing ways to cram more stuff in, not less!) That’s a great idea to resize templates to fit into those square pockets. You always have the best ideas – I’m pinning like mad. Looks like it was a wonderful week – it’s a beautiful layout!

Lisa Johnson - As usual, your pages & photos are GORGEOUS!
I ♥ how you were able to include a lot of photos by doing collages.

Project Life — A Blush Edition Preview

If you follow anything about Project Life at all you know that next Monday is a BIG DAY in the Project Life world–Project Life is going to be available on HSN! Per Lisa Bearnson’s blog, the following are the times you can find it available on HSN:

12:01 AM

1:00 AM – Today’s Special

8:00 AM – Today’s Special

12:00 PM – Today’s Special

2:00 PM

5:00 PM – Today’s Special

9:00 PM

10:00 PM – Today’s Special

This is even more exciting in my household as I made up some sample pages that may be shown. Despite me explaining multiple times to Holly that her picture might be on TV since a lot of the photos are of her, she is convinced she is going to be on TV and is telling anyone who will listen!

Because I have two little girls the Blush edition is right up my alley. I LOVE this edition. LOVE it. I will be buying at least one, if not two, HSN deals I am sure! As a reminder–the HSN Project Life opportunity will include a full edition, a binder, a big pack of photo pages, and the dividers. How exciting is that?!? DEFINITELY worth grabbing if you haven’t yet dove into creating an album before.

This was my first go at creating an “everyday” album with a traditional kit, and I must say that I was so happy with it when I was completed I almost cried. I guess, for me anyway, it was verification that I really could create something physical that looked pretty. (In all honesty I am digital mainly because I doubt my ability to do anything creative with physical product….which could be seen with my investments into paper goods over the years that never amounted to anything save scrapping my ultrasound photos you all saw in my baby album.) I truly am a “rookie” scrapbooker in the paper world!

I chose to complete the assignment of creating eight pages with an everyday theme using the Blush edition. My journaling was not completed when these photos were taken–but I couldn’t resist showing you how cute the filler and journaling cards are in this edition. Love, love, love!!! Check them out:

If you have read my blog for any length of time you know that this isn’t a real week, it’s a fake week made up of some of my favorite photos…but hey, this post is all about the cute cards right?!

Two of my favorite things about this edition:

–The colors! A bright dark teal, light teal, a bright pink and yellow, and a dark gray that is spot on perfect with any photo you convert to black and white.

–The prompts! Loved the days of the week journaling cards, and one of my favorites was the card with the little pie chart you can see in the fourth photo down. It says “How I spend my day” and then has lines with different percentages. If I remember right I filled it in with chasing kids, chasing kids, and chasing kids on the 15%, 25% and 35% of my day lines!!!

I am sure that I am not the only mom out there who is laughing at that as they read this:) Have a great day!

Nicole - This looks great Heather! Minus the pink the kit can also be so gender neutral! (I am the only girl in the house…) I am now a digital girl as well, but am often tempted to do something physical when I see great spreads like these!

libbywilko - Fun seeing your traditional kit version, it looks really pretty! Even if its not a real week :-) Such a Good idea about putting your most beautiful photography in it, it’ll be great exposure for your work too.

HSN: loads of info « Becky's Blog - [...] Heather Johnson [...]

Jennifer - Love your pages using the Blush edition.

Donna G. - You nailed this kit with these pages, Heather! Thanks for doing them!

Thelma - Absolutley LOVE what you did with this kit…i have 2 little girls and like you will definitely will be purchasing this kit along with the Jade edition!!

admin - You will go nuts for it Thelma–seriously most of the colors are so spot on their little clothing matched the papers. I think I am going to order two of the kits of HSN so I can do a book for each girl!!

Julie {CalleLillyCafe} - Yes w/3 girls love the blush too!

Sharon - Love your layouts. BLUSH is beautiful!!! I wanted to share with you a simpler way to journal. Easy peasy for catching up on journaling or just printing Becky Higgins cards in general. http://www.smpljournal.com to print your journal cards. So, so simple. No glue or tape required. Just print the templates, place your journal card in the slot, and type your stories, then print. So simple!! You can use digital brushes too. Just wanted to share!!

Happy Journaling.

Digital Project Life 2013 : Week Eleven

In Minnesota it’s still snowing (we just got a few fresh inches this morning) so I thought I would dig out the Olive kit to make me feel a little more springy. We are sooooo ready to get outside–and tomorrow? It isn’t happening. The low tonight is going to be below zero, so by morning it will only be in the single digits I am sure. I never thought I would say this–but perhaps I AM ready to move to California. Even with all that crazy traffic!

Whole Spread:

Right Side:

What we were up to this week: We had two main events this week, going to open gym time at the rec center and getting sick. That’s it! The cold hit Holly first, and then me and Marie…Justin seems to be doing okay so far. I hope Marie gets better soon…getting woken up nine times (yes NINE TIMES) last night does not a happy mommy make. I am completely exhausted…which explains why this week is pretty much no frills. I have no mojo, and barely enough photos, to make anything happen.

Techniques used this week: Other than brushes, I had a good time recoloring. The dotted paper on the inner mat? Totally recolored. The original is pink–gotta love how with digital you can make papers and elements whatever color you want to coordinateThe “Sisterly Love” 3×4 photo is an image taken with my iphone that had text added with the Photolettering App. I have a feeling this will be showing up A LOT in my layouts in the future.

Other thoughts:  I am in a bit of a slump, I truly haven’t been excited about my pages since I completed the title page a few weeks ago. That’s the last one that had me say WOW…..I am hoping it’s a combination of being tired and sick that will go away soon. My husband and I are headed out of town for a getaway this weekend, so let’s hope that my batteries get recharged and I can get to creating (and posting) more again when we return. (Couple that with the fact that a new PL Edition was just made available digitally and you know next week I will be rocking the Kraft edition. So excited about these new kits and I am hoping that will show in my layout.)

Supplies used this week: Most of the items are listed in icons below. The “cute” arrow is an Ali Edward’s brush available at designerdigitals.com, and the photo flags were a free download from Cathy Zielske. Love those flags!

libbywilko - Love how you recolour things, the polka dot mat is so fun. I hope a weekend away with your hubby brings back your creative mojo… But I wish I had your slump motivation :-) have fun .

Amy O'H. - So bright and cheery! Love the photos you captured!

Donna G. - Your lack of mojo is NOT showing, Heather! Your pages are fabulous as always! At least you’re caught up. I’m still on Week 10. Good grief. It’s not that hard (Donna tells herself). Thanks for reminding me about the CK freebies. I have them, and I forgot I had them.

Tracey Moore - Wow your photos are so clear, love your PL pages x

Anna Rose - Hi Heather

Love your work, you are a such an inspiration. Need to ask you how you manged to get the sharpnes in your Project Life layouts that you post on your blog. I struggle to get good sharpness in my pictures. I am working ing PhotosShop and have tried with Higpass filter and unsharp mask, but the still turn out blurry. Do you hand tips you could share?

Lisa Johnson - Your pages are GORGEOUS (as usual) this week.
I also ♥ your physical pages you put together for w/ the Blush edition. It’s making me so excited for Monday!

Jennifer - Your PL layouts are really great! I have enjoyed admiring your creativity and even got a little inspiration to get my own started. Thanks!
