  • Heather Johnson Photography : Minneapolis/ St Paul Children and Family Portraiture

Thank you so much for visiting my website. My name is Heather Johnson and I am a natural light lifestyle and wedding photographer that serves the Minneapolis/St Paul metropolitan area. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to show you my work!

You'll notice right away that my website is configured as a blog instead of a traditional portfolio site. I did this primarily so that you are sure to see examples of recent sessions and weddings, as well as view my latest digital memory-keeping page. I am passionate about photography and the stories they tell and I have found that the way this works best for me to capture this in my own life is through a memory-keeping system called Project Life. I am on a mission to convince everyone how simple, fun, and downright amazing it is! This blog's primary purpose is to show you how passionate I am about capturing life's moments and my hope is that once you see how dedicated I am at capturing moments in my personal life, there will be no question as to how dedicated I will be at capturing yours.

So sit back, sip some coffee, and take a look around. After you have had the chance to scroll through some of my recent blogposts, be sure to check out my children's gallery and family gallery--both of which are full of some of my favorite images. As you will see my emphasis is always on genuine laughter and fun.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Large Family Session Share — Minneapolis/St Paul Family Photographer

I am finally getting around to blogging family photo sessions from this fall. WHEW! What a whirlwind of a season it was, I swear I was outside at a park or at a wedding, or running around a field every weekend in October!

This family chose a little hobby farm for their location and it couldn’t have been more perfect. I had never done a really large family group shot before but taking it in a llama pasture, with the llamas right behind me doing God only knows what, made for some great natural smile and laughter. Perhaps I should bring them with me to all sessions?!

Not sure if you can see it or not, but we all had a laugh when we noticed the youngest guy in the group was sticking his tongue out! In the end the family did choose this photo as the one they most wanted to enlarge….love that they opted to capture “real life.” Here is a another of my favorite images from the session, little man still hadn’t quite warmed up to me yet, but it sure made for a darling photo.

The split rail fence along the horse pasture was one of my favorite locations at the farm for photos. Love how it goes off in the distance, and absolutely love how both of these images turned out. One of the best ways to get a great family photo? Have the family spread apart and then squeeze in together while looking at me. (And if you mention to mom that maybe she might want to “goose” dad–all the better!) That’s what I did here in the b/w photo…and it came out just perfect.

Rounding out the afternoon were these images below. We finally figured out the little guy was more comfortable holding his blankie (and having dad nearby, he is squatting behind the group although you can’t see him) which I think makes the image that much more adorable. When working with littles it always important to just go with the flow, and let them set the tone. Believe me, it’s impossible to force a 2 or 3 year old to do anything! I work with them, and what they can give me, and talk, talk, talk. All of that talking almost always warms them up and them we get some completely adorable images like the one on the right. (And while these kiddos are much older, and don’t always need warm up time with a stranger, they do need to be made comfortable when a great big camera is being pointed at them.)

I found the best way to get older kids to smile is just to act as silly as possible, talk to them a lot–even pop my head out above the camera after I focused, or have Mom do something they will laugh at. If you can get mom to dance, jump around, or act goofy kids just love it!

I hope to do session shares every Friday on the blog as we move throughout the year. I love reliving these session all over again through the blog, and hope you all enjoyed seeing them too.

Amy O'H. - Great photos! Love seeing how your pros position families for great shots. But I do have to say that I am a bit disappointed- I was hoping to see one llama shot after you teased us with them being so close! ;)

Digital Project Life Technique #1: Re-Coloring Elements in Photoshop

I want to start off this post with a disclaimer–I am completely self-taught as far as Photoshop is concerned so the way I do things might not be the “right way,” but it’s the way that I managed to figure it out, so it works for me. If anyone knows a quicker way to do something–by all means show me the way and leave me a comment! My other disclaimer–this is my first tutorial type video. I hope it explains everything well, and isn’t too confusing or too fast. I am still disappointed with the quality of it….I can’t quite figure out how to change that or what I did wrong. (I am thinking it might have something to do with the SD/HD settings so I am going to attempt to fix it.) But I knew a lot of you were waiting for this so I have posted it anyway. If you don’t enlarge it, it looks much better.

In my Week One layout last week I took the time to recolor ALL of the elements I used to match the Seafoam kit. (One of the HUGE plusses of digital scrapping!) I received a lot of comments and emails asking me how I did it, so I thought making a little video would help those of you that are interested in accomplishing the same thing.

Sometimes seeing a video on a blog almost stresses me out–I am often in a hurry, and I don’t necessarily have the time or desire to watch one….so if you are like me just know this…there are literally only two menu buttons I use to get this to work–the eyedropper (to sample color) and the paint bucket (to recolor whatever it is I am looking to recolor). BOOM. That’s it. That’s how easy it is. I say all of this because I swear I saw a tutorial like his on another website once and I never watched the video–finally figuring it out how to do it by accident on my own. If I had known how to do this last year—wow. Let’s just say I would have had a lot more fun with my pages! I really thought it was more complicated, and if someone would have just written that it was two steps I most likely would have taken the time to watch the video…..

Are there any other techniques you have seen in my pages that you have wanted to learn?

Please let me know and I will put together another tutorial. I hope to make this a weekly, or bi-weekly series on the blog if there is enough interest. Like I have said before, I am a huge fan of digital scrapbooking and I really enjoy showing others how it all works and what fun they can have with it.

Here’s to a great week! I have been working more on my baby album for Holly so some more peeks at that to come up soon!

Valentina - Hi Heather,

thank you so much for the video! You explained everything clearly and now I know how to recolor my digi supplies.

Have a nice day!

Sheena - Thx so much. Do you just recolor as you do your pages based on the layout ? Or do you save your new color changes for future use? For example I have a heart I want to use in almost every weekly layout but will recolor it to match the kit im using. So I would like to save a copy to use for everytime? Hope that makes sense. :) I think a good tutorial is your workflow technique. I like to get my week done as fast as possible. ;) great tutorial.

Michelle Macpherson - Hi Heather,

Awesome tutorial! I really like the little calendar you included week one – it likes like a cool item I could use each week in my album for co-hesion. I was wondering if you could do a video on how to use this?

Thx Michelle.

admin - Yes, I just recolor based on the layout. I don’t save different versions of the element either…I am sure you could, I just have so little hard drive space as it is! However, if you use a handful of the same kits again and again I can see why you would want to save a version. That’s what I would do too.

admin - Michelle,

I will add that to the list of videos to make! It’s a digital brush, which are my FAVORITE thing to use for my PL spreads.I will try and get this one ready for next Wednesday.

Lucy - Thanks for the tutorial. I love your page layouts. I would also love to see a video of your workflow, how do you manage all your layers on your page? Keep up the great work.

admin - Thanks Lucy. I had to laugh as a read this…because my workflow is so willy-nilly I think you all would be surprised at just how sporadic it is for me to find time to complete a week. Since I have already started next week’s layout–I will set the schedule to do a workflow video to be published the week of the 28th. That way I can document and record what it’s like to do a digital PL spread from start to end next week. I can keep a diary of sorts, and do a video of putting it all together. It will be humorous I am sure!

Andrea - I love the calendars that you used in week one and week two. I purchased this item from Jessica Sprague’s website but yours are so cute can you do a video on how you use these.

Amy O'H. - Great tutorial!

Carla - Hey!
Thank you sooo much for teaching how to do this! I can’t wait to try it :)

Donna G. - Oh my goodness! This is great! I’ve mostly learned PS at the School of Trial and Error. Sometimes recoloring worked for me; other times . . . not so much. I’d try it, and if it didn’t work, I assumed the planets must not be in the right alignment, and I’d forget it. All I had to do was put the little point of the bucket exactly on what I wanted to recolor?! Duh. Thanks, Heather!

Jenny B. - This is a great tutorial! I asked this question just the other day to Sheri at Sheri Mae Designs, and she posted a link to your tutorial today! Great timing! :) I had to adjust the tolerance on my paint bucket tool to get good results. I was trying to change the background color of a solid colored card that had white script writing over it. When I first started, it kept putting the color too much over the edges of the white script, but after I lowered the tolerance (I ended up putting it at zero), it worked perfectly. Thanks so much! :)

nita - thanks- clear for me and nice to do!

Brenda R. - This is great. And the little error that you had with the bucket… it made it so much clearer to me! Thanks!

kansaskel - Thanks for the tutorial – I found it easy to follow, and I can’t wait to try the technique. It will really expand my stash to be able to change the colors on design elements!

Rhadonda - Seriously? That was genius. You made it so understandable and i am sorry the oops happened but you are right because inevitably that would be what happens to me and i see that i can live through it ( : Look forward to more! I.LOVE.DIGI!!

Digital Project Life 2013 : Week Two

Week two was really fun to put together. I mainly used Pebble’s Seen and Noted collection, easily my new favorite digital kit. The colors, the elements, the everything–I loved it all! Here is a look at the whole spread:

The left side:

The right side:

Lots of normalcy this week–I didn’t end up with a lot of photos in the end so there are no inserts to contend with. I used the week in review card again, I am going to try and have one of those every week if I am able. I found that my favorite layouts last year were ones that included it. I am still working on the digital elements recoloring video, it was all uploaded to Vimeo–but is blurry for some reason. Hopefully I can get it figured out so I can post it tomorrow. I know many of you are anxious to view it!

sharon71 - Absolutely gorgeous Heather! Your photography and layout is just beautiful. I can’t believe how much your little one has grown, it goes too fast doesn’t it?

I am going back to read through all of your posts :)

Kelsey McEvoy - I think we may be in competition for the happiest baby alive ;)

My youngest is a boy and let me tell you — SO much easier and relaxed and carefree and happier than my girls were as babies! He has the biggest smile that takes up half his face…and it’s ALWAYS turned on. In fact, I even journaled about it in my PL spread for this week just like you did!

I LOVE the arrows 3×4 card, the vibrant colors (so full of life and happiness!), and the 6-photo sequence of your little one’s adventurous tumble off that chair :)

Debbie - Hi Heather! I’m loving the inspiration you have to share with us Project Lifers! Your layouts and photos are just gorgeous. I’m working with Seafoam this year and struggling a bit so I’m encouraged when I see how other people are using it and making it work. Okay, so off topic… I have to say it – Have you ever had someone say your oldest looks like a young Hermione? Just adorable, both of them. :)

Lisa Johnson - I ♥ ♥ ♥ your layout this week.
The kit you used is adorable!
I love looking at your Project Life pages.
Thanks for sharing your talent!

admin - I had to look up who Hermoine was! I have never had anyone tell me that…but when I saw who you were talking about I can definitely see what you are talking about. I struggled with Seafoam last week (the kit I used for week two is much more “me”) but after awhile I got it to work. If you get stuck just scroll through pinterest. I always find something on there to inspire me and get me going!

Sandy - Always so amazing! Love this kit and your babies are adorable and just so happy! Can’t help but make me smile. Your pictures are so nice, and I Love looking at your pages. Thanks!

sheena - Love your week….I will for sure keep checking out your pages for inspiration! I love the kit you added on too..I bought it too and it gives my Seafoam pages a little more color! Yipee! Keep up the good work!

Margie S (Nihao, Cupcake!) - I love your photos – so clean & crisp. I have a son who is obsessed with Clementines as well. He doesn’t chant the tagline, but he does eat 3-4-5 in one sitting. I love them too, my favorite fruit because they are so easy to eat and delicious! Now I need to make sure I get that in my album – thanks for the inspiration.

Cerise - What a GORGEOUS kit! I love the bright colors and how the black and white photos just pop.
I can’t imagine not being able to bake or use the stove. Our oven broke down a couple years ago and I went just about nuts without it. Thankfully it was separate from the stove, so I at least had that!

libbywilko - Marie is looking so grown up in that high chair smiling picture, so pretty! Another great week Heather ! Thanks for sharing it with us !

sue - I am totally WOWED by this layout. Everything about it is gorgeous – your photos, the kit you used – everything!

I love how you used bright background paper and made the template smaller – so awesome!

Sara - What a fun, colorful layout! Adorable! And your photos are simply stunning! I love looking through digital PL layouts. Great job!

Michelle Macpherson - I just love the 3×4 cards on the first page. I recognise the ‘Remember This’ from my Seafoma kit, but I don’t see the others in the Pebbles kit – did you create these from scratch?
If so, perhaps you could show us an example of this when you do your workflow video – I’m still at the stage of only being able to use the ready-made cards.

sbee - Love your layouts but most of all I really love how you manage to get yourself in all those layouts. I think that is the biggest challenge of all…even more than keeping up to date. :)

Digital Project Life : Volume One 2012 off to Shutterfly!

I had a lot of fun putting this together and absolutely cannot wait to hold it in my hands and actually SEE my pages somewhere other than my computer screen. Peek Away!

Create your own personalized photo books at Shutterfly.com.

If you have taken a look at the book you will see I did a combination of things within it to bring it all together. My weekly pages were always created using Project Life templates, but at month’s end I created different collages using either idea pages (found within the Clementine Edition on Shutterfly) or a grid layout with a Clementine Background. These grids were created simply by using a layout option within Shutterfly, and because I was technically within their version of the Clementine Edition, I was able to use a Clementine “paper” as my background.

Many of you have asked how to get a digital 12×12 page from photoshop to Shutterfly, and for those of you looking at how to do just that I invite you to take a look at my original blog post on this topic. (Another creative team member, Haley Ney, recently did up a blog post on this very topic as well.) Between the two of us I think we have you covered!

And speaking of sharing information, I have completed my first video tutorial on how to recolor digital elements. EEEEeeK!!! It’s uploading to Vimeo now, and will be posted here on Wednesday. I hope I don’t sound like a fool!!! After the 90th take I decided you all were going to hear me “as is” goof ups and giggles and all. Just keepin’ it real……

Jen J - Did you resize your pages down to 11.95? I did, and when I got my shtuterfly book back the pages were slightly cut off. This time, (going to submit volume 2 today!!) I resized them all to 11.85 but I don’t know what that will do.
Also, how many pages were you able to include in your book? I had to do two volumes for 2012 beause origianlly there was a limit (100 pages or something).
Thanks
Your work is fabulous!
Also- now that you have a vimeo account you can start include QR barcodes (home videos!!) into your pages. One of my very most favoritefeatures.

admin - Hi Jen,

I did resize them to 11.95, I am bummed for you that that still cut them off. (So surprising, too, as that is the measurement they give on their website to resize to. They need to update their stuff!!!) Because I was afraid of anything getting cut off, no matter how careful I was, I double-matted everything with Jessica’s mat she offered up as a free download awhile ago. (It’s part of her digital project life class now.) I broke my year up into two books as well, 26 weeks in one and 26 weeks in the other. Because I did some stuff at month’s end…I think my book ended up being between 80-90 pages. I am pretty sure you can go up to 104 if you wanted to do all of the weeks (without inserts) into one book. I have never done the QR code thing, but agree that is pretty awesome!!!

Amy O'H. - Congrats on finishing 2012!! Looking forward to your video!

Jen - Thank you for your reply. I had also talked to shutterfly and they originally said to re-size the photos to 11.95 x 11.95, which I did and still had the cropping problem. Bummer. I called them again to find a way to fix it and they suggested I re-size it even smaller, to the inside bleed measurement. I’ve played around with every size and it all seems to be the same outcome. I love the layered look by Jessica Sprague and have played around with it a bit. My pages are all complete, so now when I re-size them to the 89%, some of them are off-centered so it takes time to get everything aligned. Do you get the layered template before you start doing your pages? I noticed that some of yours aren’t double-layered. Will you layer them later or leave those? I’m just looking for the most efficient way to change my pages. For my 2013 book, I will do things differently. :)

admin - I got the layered template like 20 weeks in. I went back and did all of them that way–and yes it is a pain in the patootie! I had a ton off center too because I tend to clip 12×12 pieces of paper to small pieces of the template…and ugh! It creates a mess. Towards the end of the year I stopped doing it, I seriously think I forgot to, and now I am forced to go back and change them all before I upload them to Shutterfly. Good thing I have a scrapping night with a friend scheduled next week!!! I am with you–I am not going to do this to myself in 2013–I am trying to do it “right” from the beginning.

Debbie - Wow Heather, just breathtaking. LOVED looking through your book. Thanks again for the inspiration!

Amy - Oh my word! This is awesome! Makes me want to do something similar but am too overwhelmed to start. Great inspiration!

Jan - I so loved your book…thank you sharing. It was so good to see
the finished book. I am doing Project Life digitally this year and have been wondering how to print. I took Jessica’s class and will have to go back and see about the resizing etc, and do it now,
just in case I decide on a book.♥

Dana Klinkner - OMG – I love your digital PL album! It turned out SOOOO good! I love how you added pages of instagram from your Disney trip & all the month recaps about your kids – so amazing! Your album totally inspired me – thanks so much for sharing! :)

The Project Lifer | A Scrapper’s Style Interview with Heather Johnson | Simply Tiffany Studios - [...] I do scrapbook extra things, not too much yet, but now that I really make time for scrapbooking in my life I do a whole lot more. What I did last year is put special things (like trips to Disney) right in my book. You can see what that looks like  on my blog. [...]

Digital Project Life : Baby Edition for Her Title Page and Week One Inserts

While I wait for my paper baby kit to arrive, I dabbled a bit with a digital title page for Holly’s baby book album. I absolutely love this kit–Becky has truly thought of EVERYTHING. All of the prompt cards, journaling cards, and title cards are going to make putting the book together a snap! If you have been on the fence, I recommend jumping over it. I know you won’t be sorry. Here is my title page:

Holly is five and I must admit I was a bit worried to begin a baby book for her as I feared I wouldn’t remember things. But once I started going through the photos…oh my. It all comes rushing back!

I was on quite the scrapbooking roll yesterday (that’s what an evening to myself and four consecutive ours of Downton Abbey will get you) so I finished up my week one inserts. So far, so good right!? I used one of Design Editor’s 6×12 templates, altered a bit for my photos, and one of Becky’s templates–again altered. That’s why I love digital so much! I left a small white line between the two so you can tell where one page ends and another begins.

Love how these turned out and really look forward to getting them printed.

I have received a lot of emails lately regarding how creating digital pages works with Shutterfly, so look for a post again on that soon. (I wrote a post last winter on this topic here, but will revisit it and perhaps make a video.)

Have a great Thursday!

Ashley - Love the baby layout! Makes me want to re-do my boys baby books Project Life style :)

libbywilko - Love the baby page and the inserts too !

admin - Thanks for all of the lovely comments Libby!
